Mazingira Day Guide

World Environment Day, also known as Mazingira Day in some regions, was established by the United Nations in 1972 during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. The first celebration took place in 1974. It has since grown to become a global platform for public outreach, with participation from over 143 countries annually.

This day serves as the principal UN vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. It's a day for people from all walks of life to come together to ensure a cleaner, greener, and brighter outlook for themselves and future generations. Each year, it has a new theme that major corporations, NGOs, communities, governments, and celebrities worldwide adopt to advocate for environmental causes.
